More than 10 students have been arrested in connection with the violent clashes between Okuapeman Senior High School and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The arrests follow a series of reprisal attacks between students of the two schools, which led to the destruction and burning of several facilities on both campuses in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Owusu-Bempah, confirmed that several students had been taken into custody, with more arrests expected as investigations continue.
He explained that some students fled their respective schools when the Police arrived at the scene but warned that escaping would not shield anyone identified as having participated in the violence.
“We have apprehended them. And there are more,” he said.
The Regional Police Commander said investigators were putting together a comprehensive list of individuals believed to have been involved in the clashes as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Teachers allegedly under investigation
DCOP Owusu-Bempah also disclosed that the investigation had produced information suggesting that some teachers may have encouraged students to attack students from the other school.
He said the Police had obtained the names of teachers allegedly connected to the incident and would take appropriate action if their involvement was established.
“We have the names of the teachers. They have nowhere to go. At the appropriate time, we will arrest all of them, and their names will be published,” he warned.
He assured the public that anyone found to have participated in the violence would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The Police commander also appealed to students to return to school and cooperate with investigators as efforts continue to restore calm.
He cautioned individuals and groups against interfering with the investigation, warning that any such interference could undermine attempts to establish accountability and prevent further violence.
Six Okuapeman students injured
The clashes left six students of Okuapeman SHS injured, with the victims taken to hospital for medical attention.
The school’s Headmaster said four of the injured students had been treated and discharged, while two remained on admission as of Wednesday.
The precise circumstances that triggered the confrontation have yet to be established.
The Police have commenced further investigations to determine what sparked the clashes, identify all persons involved and establish whether others, including members of staff, played a role in the violence.
