Methodist Presiding Bishop charges newly inducted Bishop Rt. Rev. Samuel Bassaw to anchor Cape Coast Diocese leadership in God’s Word

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, The Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, has charged the newly inducted Bishop of the Cape Coast Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Bassaw, to make the word of God the foundation of his leadership.

Preaching at the induction service, the Presiding Bishop said Rt. Rev. Samuel Bassaw would face challenges in his new role but urged him to remain faithful to scripture and trust in God’s guidance.

His sermon, titled “From Mandate to Promise: Leading through God’s Word”, was based on Joshua 1:1–9, which recounts God’s instructions to Joshua following the death of Moses.

The Presiding Bishop said the passage offered important lessons for Christian leaders, particularly the need to remain obedient to God while carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to them.

He reminded Bishop Samuel Bassaw that his authority as a Bishop came with a responsibility to study, teach and live by the scriptures.

“The book of the law shall not depart from your mouth. You shall meditate on it day and night,” he said, quoting Joshua 1:8.

He urged the newly inducted Cape Coast Bishop not to take his personal relationship with God for granted, stressing that regular engagement with scripture was essential to guiding the church and sharing God’s word with its members.

The Presiding Bishop also encouraged him to remain grounded in the Methodist tradition, which he described as a tradition built on the word of God.

Drawing parallels between Joshua’s leadership and Bishop Samuel Bassaw’s new assignment, the Presiding Bishop said leadership often came with difficulties that required courage, patience and faith.

The Presiding Bishop said Bishop Samuel Bassaw should also be prepared for obstacles as he led the Cape Coast Diocese. “You will have your own Jordans in this ministry of leadership,” he said.

He explained that God had not only given Joshua a task but had also assured him of his presence and support.

The Presiding Bishop said the same principle applied to Christian leadership, adding that God’s promises must be accompanied by obedience to his word.

He cited Joshua 1:6–8, where Joshua was instructed to be strong and courageous, obey God’s law and avoid turning away from it.

According to the Presiding Bishop, the success of Bishop Samuel Bassaw’s ministry would depend, in part, on his willingness to follow God’s instructions and lead according to the teachings of scripture.

He cautioned against leaders setting their own standards for ministry, insisting that Christian leadership must reflect the example of Jesus Christ.

The Presiding Bishop described Bishop Bassaw’s responsibility as that of a pastor and leader called to guide the church in Cape Coast.

He expressed confidence that God would sustain him in the role and encouraged him to draw strength from the assurance in Joshua 1:9 that God would remain with him wherever he went.

He prayed for the new Bishop’s tenure to be characterised by a vibrant, prayerful church that continually sought God’s direction.

The Presiding Bishop also asked God to grant Bishop Smuel Bassaw wisdom and spiritual discernment to guide members of all ages and provide direction to those who sought his counsel.

He expressed the hope that the Holy Spirit would remain present among the congregation and that Bishop Bassaw would lead the Diocese successfully.

The induction of Rt. Rev. Samuel Bassaw marks the beginning of his ministry as Bishop of the Cape Coast Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana.
