Workers of the National Identification Authority (NIA), under the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU), have maintained their decision to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike beginning Wednesday, May 13, 2026, despite efforts by management to halt the action.
Management of the NIA had earlier appealed to staff to suspend the planned industrial action and allow an additional two weeks for government to finalise processes relating to migration reports that affect staff conditions of service.
However, in a statement issued on Saturday, May 9, the NIA division of the union insisted that the strike would proceed as planned, describing the decision as unanimous among members across the country.
The union explained that the action follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued by its parent union, after what it describes as delays in addressing longstanding concerns.
As part of the lead-up to the strike, workers have been instructed to report to their offices on Monday, May 11, and Tuesday, May 12, dressed in red clothing or wearing red armbands as a symbol of solidarity and protest.
From Wednesday, May 13, all members are expected to withdraw their services completely until their demands are fully addressed.
“You will rise from your beds and return to them, until further notice, and until our just demands are met,” parts of the statement indicated.
The union further urged members to remain united and comply strictly with the directive, stressing that enforcement will be carried out at regional levels to ensure full participation.
The statement, signed by Divisional Chairman Francis Bangfudeme Nyuzaghl and Assistant Divisional Secretary Godsway Ayivor Bismark, declared: “No retreat, no surrender until victory.”
If the strike proceeds as planned, operations at NIA offices nationwide are expected to be severely disrupted, affecting key services such as Ghana Card registration, card replacements, and personal data updates for citizens.
