Bawumia’s rival appointments hailed as strategic unity move within npp

Political analyst Jonathan Asante Otchere has described Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s decision to appoint his former rivals in the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearership contest to key policy committees as a “massive stroke” that could significantly strengthen unity within the party.

The appointments saw Kennedy Ohene Agyapong named to the Employment and Jobs Policy Committee, Kwabena Agyapong assigned to the Housing and Urban Development Policy Committee, Bryan Acheampong placed on the Defence and Interior Policy Committee, and Yaw Osei Adutwum appointed to the Education Policy Committee.

Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, speaking on the development, said the move reflects a deliberate strategy to consolidate internal cohesion within the New Patriotic Party while strengthening its policy formulation structures.

According to him, integrating former competitors into influential roles sends a strong message of inclusiveness and helps bridge internal divisions that often emerge after competitive flagbearership contests.

He argued that beyond unity, the decision also places each appointee in policy areas that align closely with their professional experience and political background, potentially improving the quality of policy output.

“It is quite strategic. If only these colleagues have accepted these appointments, I think it is a massive stroke. Once you have been able to get them on board, their grassroots support will definitely be on his side,” he said.

Dr. Otchere further noted that the move carries strong political symbolism, suggesting that it presents the party as more united and forward-looking.

“It is good for the optics. The optics is that it creates a semblance of unity,” he added.

The appointments are widely interpreted as part of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s broader efforts to reinforce internal collaboration, manage post-primaries dynamics, and build consensus within the NPP ahead of future electoral contests.
