Koforidua Diocese of The Methodist Church Ghana refurbishes Eastern Regional Hospital ward, says move will improve patient care

The Methodist Church Ghana, Koforidua Diocese, has handed over a newly refurbished male medical ward to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua, in a move aimed at improving patient care and hospital infrastructure.

The project, undertaken under the Church’s Heal Project initiative, was formally dedicated by the Diocesan Bishop, the Rt Rev Dennis Joseph Boadu, alongside clergy and senior members of the Church.

Speaking at the ceremony, Bishop Boadu said the initiative reflects the Church’s long standing commitment to social responsibility, beyond its spiritual role.

He said there is often a perception that the Church focuses only on preaching and prayer, but noted that it also has a duty to contribute to society through social services. He added that the project follows the example of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who was known for his work in social reform and healthcare.

The renovated facility, now known as the Koforidua Methodist Diocese Male Medical Ward, has undergone extensive improvements. These include the refurbishment of bathrooms and washrooms, installation of water heaters, air conditioning units, television sets, refrigerators, and provision of new bedsheets and other equipment. The building has also been repainted to create a brighter and more welcoming environment.

The Lay Chairman of the Koforidua Diocese, Samuel Kwesi Appah Peniel, said the project was inspired by faith and compassion.

He said caring for the sick is both a humanitarian and spiritual responsibility, adding that the initiative is designed to improve patient outcomes, strengthen infection control measures and provide a more dignified environment for patients.

According to him, the project began in March 2026 after receiving approval from the hospital’s management in November 2025.

The Medical Director of the Eastern Regional Hospital, Dr Aiden Suntaa Saanwie, welcomed the intervention and described it as significant.

He said the refurbishment goes beyond physical changes, noting that the environment plays an important role in the healing process. He added that the upgraded ward would help restore dignity to patient care and improve overall patient experience.

Dr Saanwie also assured that the hospital would ensure the proper use and maintenance of the facility.

He said management and staff are committed to making full use of the ward for the benefit of patients, while maintaining the facilities to ensure they serve their intended purpose.

Both Church leaders and hospital officials highlighted the importance of partnerships in strengthening healthcare delivery, noting that collaboration is essential in addressing infrastructure challenges in the sector.

The Methodist Church expressed appreciation to donors, partners and individuals who supported the project, and called on other organisations to contribute to similar initiatives aimed at improving healthcare across the country.

The refurbished ward is expected to enhance patient comfort, boost staff morale and contribute to improved health outcomes at the hospital.
