Barcelona secure 2-0 victory over Real Madrid

FC Barcelona have clinched the Spanish league title after a commanding 2-0 win over rivals Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clásico, officially sealing the championship with matches still to play.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres gave Barcelona a decisive victory that extended their lead at the top of the table to 14 points, with only three fixtures remaining in the season.

The triumph secures the La Liga crown under head coach Hansi Flick, marking a successful campaign in his debut season in charge of the Catalan giants.

The match carried emotional weight for Flick, who remained on the sidelines despite the recent passing of his father. Players from both sides wore black armbands and observed a minute of silence before kickoff in tribute.

After the final whistle at a packed Camp Nou, Barcelona players and fans celebrated wildly as the club confirmed another league title. Flick later praised his squad, describing them as a united group that had worked like a “family” throughout the season.

The victory represents Barcelona’s 29th Spanish league title, further strengthening their position as one of the most successful clubs in the country’s football history, behind only Real Madrid in total championships.

Since taking over in 2024, Flick has now guided Barcelona to back-to-back league successes, while also adding domestic silverware including two Spanish Super Cups and a Copa del Rey triumph from the previous season.

The team also impressed offensively, registering a scoring streak of 55 consecutive matches, one of the most remarkable runs in the club’s history.

Despite their domestic dominance, Barcelona’s European campaign fell short once again. They were eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals by Inter Milan last season and exited this year’s competition at the quarter-final stage against Atlético Madrid.

Their league victory was not without setbacks. Barcelona had previously trailed Real Madrid by five points earlier in the season after losing the first Clásico at the Santiago Bernabéu. However, Madrid’s inconsistent form in the latter stages of the campaign allowed Barcelona to take control and pull away at the top.

Real Madrid’s inability to recover from a string of dropped points ultimately cost them the title race, with the defeat to Barcelona confirming a second consecutive season without a major trophy for the Spanish giants.
