Christian Council of Ghana to hold first-ever Ecumenical Convention as it turns 96

The Christian Council of Ghana is celebrating 96 years of its existence in Ghana in promoting the welfare of people of the faith and otherwise.

The churches that make up the Ecumenism is the Methodist Church Ghana, the AME Zion Church, Evangelical Presby Church, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and the Anglican Church which came together on October 13, 1929 to form the Christian Council of Ghana with the Local Council of Churches eventually being a part of the ecumenical body.

The Rev Johoiada G. K. Amuzu, Coordinator for Interfaith & Ecumenical Relation for the Christian Council of Ghana said the aim of the Council is to promote unity, work together on issues of social concern and promote the welfare of all the people both Christians and non Christians alike.

Hon. Koku Anyidoho the Chairman of Ecumenical Convention Planning Committee, Christian Council of Ghana said even as a politician his upbringing doesn’t deter him from getting lost from the God Factor.

“My upbringing is church work and within the political space, my political father, the Late Prof Mills with whom the God factor in nation building was never lost on him and some of us closer to him. He will pray during cabinet meetings himself and pray after even as president and after his morning devotions”, he added.

He noted that our main state symbol of mother Ghana since 1956 is with the start of the National Anthem ” God bless our homeland Ghana”.

“I have carried the God factor in nations building with me at all times because politics is a vocation but God’s work is a calling, he noted.

The Coordinator for Interfaith & Ecumenical Relation for the Christian Council of Ghana stressed that the council has contributed to the development of the nation over the years both country and citizens alike, being the voice for the voiceless in society, partnered government to shape state policies including government and the councils consultations on policies formation for the good people of Ghana.

He added that the council has over the years trained counselors as family life Educators and counselors who are working in churches and hospitals across the country.

Hon. Koku Anyidoho says he doesn’t believe in the saying that the council has been engaging in “firefighting” when issues of national interests arise rather than fighting before the issue rears it’s head but he answered “what the council seeks to do is subtle diplomacy -behind tgw scenes issues tackling and when good results come in the council is not acknowledged.

Rev Amuzu further added that the council uses the “Nathan Principle”.

“If you want to touch the heart of people in power, you don’t rub shoulders with them. You use diplomacy just like David and Nathan’s encounter in the Bible”.

The Christian Council of Ghana is Celebrating 96 years of existence with lots of activities with churches of the ecumenical body as well as local council of churches with the first ever ecumenical convention slated for November 14-16, 2025.
