Security personnel in Nkwanta in the Oti Region have intercepted a large quantity of ammunition during two separate intelligence-led operations, leading to the arrest of two suspects.
According to a statement from the Ghana Police Service in the Oti Region dated May 17, 2026, the first operation involved the interception of a 66-seater MGI bus with registration number AS 248-P at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta.
A search of the vehicle uncovered 750 live J/G cartridges concealed in a black polythene bag inside three brown boxes, each containing 250 rounds of ammunition.
Police identified one of the suspects as Hudu Mahama, 53, who was serving as the driver’s mate on the bus.
According to the statement, the suspect allegedly admitted ownership of the ammunition during preliminary interrogation.
In a separate but related operation on the same day, a joint Police and Military taskforce retrieved another box containing 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges after it reportedly fell from a suspect’s motorbike during a high-speed chase.
The rider managed to escape with a second box of ammunition, while officers continue efforts to trace and arrest the fleeing suspect.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of another suspect, identified as Christian Kwasi Alonise, 57, who is also assisting police with ongoing investigations.
The Joint Security Taskforce has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the area, stressing that operations to clamp down on illegal possession, concealment, and transportation of ammunition will be intensified.
Authorities say efforts are underway to recover the missing ammunition and apprehend all individuals connected to the incident as investigations continue.
