A final-year student of Mfantsipim School has been found dead in an uncompleted building in Cape Coast, prompting grief across the school community and renewed attention to youth mental health concerns.
The deceased, identified as 17-year-old Emmanuel Arthur, was preparing to sit this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to the Central Regional Police Command, officers responded to a report on 11 June 2026 after a carpenter working near an abandoned structure at Ola North, a residential area within the Cape Coast metropolis, discovered a body and alerted authorities.
Investigators who arrived at the scene recovered several personal belongings believed to belong to the student. These included a black backpack containing academic materials, among them a Geography Paper One mock examination paper bearing his name, as well as two mobile phones and other personal effects.
The items led police to contact authorities at Mfantsipim School, who confirmed that Emmanuel Arthur was a final-year student of the institution. His family was subsequently informed and assisted with the identification process.
Police said the body was found in an advanced state of decomposition, suggesting it had been at the location for some time before being discovered. Following a post-mortem examination at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, the remains were released to the family for burial.
As a precautionary public health measure, the uncompleted building where the body was found was fumigated after the recovery operation.
Police investigations have concluded that the student died by suicide. However, authorities say they are continuing inquiries to establish the circumstances and possible factors that may have contributed to the tragedy.
The incident has left students, staff and the wider Mfantsipim community in mourning as investig
ations continue.
