Hen Ara Nkonkonko marks 60th Anniversary with renovation of Female Medical Ward at Tema General Hospital

The Hen Ara Nkonkonko Association has renovated the Female Medical Ward at the Tema General Hospital and donated essential items to support healthcare delivery as part of activities marking its 60th anniversary.

The association, a humanitarian organization comprising members from various Christian denominations, Muslims, and people from different backgrounds, undertook the project as part of its commitment to giving back to society and improving healthcare services.

Speaking in an interview with WTV, the President of the Hen Ara Nkonkonko Association, Mrs. Sophia Quarshie Mad said the organization first engaged management of the Tema General Hospital to identify some of the facility’s most pressing needs before deciding on the intervention.

According to her, members of the association were devastated by the condition of the Female Medical Ward during their visit.

“We visited the hospital authorities to get a clue on where they were lacking and what they needed most. What we saw at the ward was heartbreaking. The state of the facility was an eyesore, and we felt compelled to intervene,” she said.

She explained that the renovation project forms part of the association’s legacy initiatives to commemorate its 60 years of humanitarian service.

The project involved refurbishing the Female Medical Ward to create a more conducive environment for patient care and recovery, alongside the donation of several items to support healthcare delivery.

However, a member of the Hen Ara Nkonkonko Association, Ms. Tracy Quarshie, outlined the group’s broader humanitarian plans as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations.

She noted that the association has already carried out interventions including visits to orphanages and the renovation of the Female Medical Ward.

“As part of our 60 years anniversary, we’ve been to the orphanage, we’ve done the renovation of the Female Medical Ward,” she said.

Ms. Quarshie added that the organization plans to extend its outreach to correctional facilities and other hospitals in the future.

“As part of our activities, we are going to visit the prison. In the near future, we might look into other hospitals. We have the Ashaiman hospitals and several hospitals within the Tema Metropolis, so we are going to look into that going forward,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the Principal Nursing Officer of the Female Medical Ward, Nana Mensimah Aikins, speaking to WTV, highlighted some of the challenges that still confront the ward and appealed for further support to enhance patient care.

She expressed gratitude to the Hen Ara Nkonkonko Association for its intervention and support.

“We are very grateful for this special occasion by the Hen Ara Nkonkonko Association. Most importantly, we appreciate the renovation that has taken place in our ward and within the Tema General Hospital. We are sincerely thankful,” she said.

Ms. Aikins noted that although many challenges have been addressed through the intervention, the ward still requires additional medical equipment.

“We have challenges, but most of them have been ironed out by the Hen Ara Nkonkonko Association. However, we still need basic items to enhance our patients’ healing and recovery,” she stated.

She mentioned items such as blood pressure apparatuses, pulse oximeters, vital signs monitoring equipment, printers, and other essential gadgets needed for effective healthcare delivery.

“We need BP apparatuses, pulse oximeters, monitors, printers for stationeries and a whole lot of gadgets that will help in patient recovery,” she added.

The renovation and donation exercise formed a major highlight of the association’s diamond jubilee celebrations and demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian service and community development.

Hospital officials commended the group for its support and expressed optimism that the improved facilities will enhance patient care and recovery at the Tema General Hospital.
