Mahama approves evacuation of 300 ghanaians from south africa over xenophobic attacks

John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential approval for the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians currently living in South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks reported in parts of the country.

The evacuation exercise is expected to be coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in collaboration with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria.

According to government sources, the affected individuals are among Ghanaians who responded to an earlier advisory issued by the Foreign Ministry, urging citizens residing in South Africa to register with the High Commission if they required assistance or evacuation due to rising tensions and attacks targeting foreign nationals.

Authorities say the 300 approved evacuees officially registered with the Ghanaian mission following reports of renewed violence, intimidation, and insecurity in some South African communities.

Government says the intervention forms part of broader efforts to protect Ghanaian citizens abroad and ensure their safe return home amid growing concerns over the safety of migrants in affected areas.

The Mahama administration has further assured the public that the welfare, safety, and protection of Ghanaians both at home and abroad remain a top priority for government.

Officials are expected to announce additional details regarding transportation arrangements, timelines, and reintegration support for the returnees in the coming days.
