The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has raised concerns about the alleged involvement of some security personnel in facilitating criminal activities, warning that such conduct could undermine trust between Ghana and international security partners.
He cited the recent seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine by French customs authorities from a container of plastic waste that arrived at the northern port of Dunkirk from Ghana.
Speaking at a training programme for Regional Security Councils (REGSEC) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) on the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2026 (Act 1168), Mr Muntaka said alleged insider involvement in criminal activities could make foreign security agencies increasingly cautious about sharing intelligence with Ghana.
He said international counterparts may question whether information shared with Ghana could be compromised or misused by individuals within the security system.
“It’s sad that even the recent things that we are hearing, it is insiders who are aiding and abetting criminals,” he said.
The Minister said such developments could create uncertainty among Ghana’s international security partners, who may be reluctant to share sensitive information while investigations are ongoing.
“They don’t know whether the insider, the minister, is also part of it, or the coordinator is part of it. Now, you are asking them to give you information. Meanwhile, they’ve not finished their investigation,” he added.
Mr Muntaka stressed the need for stronger coordination and trust between Ghana’s security agencies and their international counterparts to tackle emerging security threats.
He also cautioned against the politicisation of security matters, urging stakeholders to prioritise national security and professional cooperation.
