You appointed me, so give me resources to work – rent Commissioner to Mahama

The Acting Commissioner of the Rent Control Department, Frederick Opoku, has appealed directly to President John Dramani Mahama to provide the department with the resources needed to effectively perform its mandate.

Mr Opoku said his appointment comes with a responsibility to deliver for Ghanaians, but the department cannot work effectively without adequate funding, logistics and office space.

He called on the President to ensure that the institution responsible for regulating Ghana’s rental sector is properly resourced.

“Mr. President, you appointed me to work, so I should be resourced to work. I cannot do this job effectively without the necessary resources,” he said.

Mr Opoku said since he began the crackdown on unlicensed hostels, he has not received the logistical support needed to sustain the exercise.

“Since I started this hostel crackdown, nobody has given me anything. We need the resources, gadgets, and logistics to do the work properly,” he said.

According to him, the department is also operating without adequate office facilities, a situation he said must be urgently addressed.

“We don’t even have proper offices. How do you expect us to work effectively under these conditions?” he asked.

Mr Opoku said he would no longer remain silent about the challenges confronting the department, insisting that the issues must be brought into the open for the necessary action to be taken.

“We will stop hiding things and talking about them in secret. If necessary, I will petition the President himself because these issues have to be addressed,” he stated.

He stressed that the Rent Control Department requires sustained government investment if it is to effectively regulate the rental sector and protect the interests of both tenants and landlords.
