Ghanaian sprinter Abdul Rasheed Saminu has revealed that words of encouragement from fellow athlete Benjamin Azamati motivated him to pursue Ghana’s national 100 metres record.
Speaking in an interview with Joy Sports, Saminu said he shared his ambition with Azamati before the race, and the former record holder encouraged him to give it everything he had.
According to Saminu, Azamati advised him to fully commit to the challenge, insisting that breaking the record could significantly boost his ambitions of turning professional.
“When I told Azamati I wanted to go for the national record, he encouraged me to take the shot,” Saminu revealed.
The sprinter explained that he entered the competition feeling confident after weeks of intense preparation and training.
“I trained very hard and felt ready before the race,” he stated.
Saminu also described the emotional moment after crossing the finish line, admitting he initially had no idea he had achieved such a remarkable feat until the stadium announcer confirmed the time.
“I didn’t even look at the clock after the race until the commentator announced it,” he added.
