The Wesley Girls High School Old Girls Association has issued a strong statement responding to recent public debates surrounding allegations of religious discrimination at the school.
The Association reaffirmed its confidence in the long-standing values and governance structure of the institution, stressing that the school has consistently upheld a tradition of welcoming students from diverse religious backgrounds.
According to the Association, Wesley Girls High School has maintained a history of providing a well-structured environment rooted in Methodist principles, ensuring that students of various Christian denominations as well as those of other faiths are given equal opportunity to thrive. The Association therefore rejects any attempt to portray the school as intolerant or discriminatory.
The statement noted that Wesley Girls High School stands in loco parentis to thousands of students and, in line with this responsibility, applies objective guidelines that promote discipline, safety, health, and academic excellence.
These guidelines, the Association explained, are consistent with the provisions of the 2024 Memorandum of Understanding and are required of all students without exception.
While acknowledging that students may have individual religious preferences, the Old Girls Association emphasized that the school cannot adopt arrangements that may compromise its curriculum, routines, or long-established standards.
Recognizing the diversity of the student population, the Association explained that granting allowances for one religious group would require that equal accommodations be extended to all, a situation it believes would be impractical and potentially disruptive. It stressed that the school’s traditions are central to its enviable reputation and must be preserved to ensure fairness and stability.
The statement further highlighted the enduring partnership between the Methodist Church Ghana and the State, describing it as a testament to the school’s quality and discipline. The Association noted that Wesley Girls High School is built on a firm Methodist foundation that has shaped generations of capable and principled women.
While reaffirming respect for the constitutional right to religious freedom, the Old Girls Association clarified that this freedom operates within the framework of institutional guidelines, particularly in faith-based government-assisted schools where the ethos is clearly defined.
The Association fully endorsed the position of the Methodist Church Ghana, noting that many alumnae and current parents remain committed to upholding the spiritual and moral values upon which the school was established more than a century ago.
The Association called on all stakeholders to approach the discussion with restraint and a commitment to the welfare of students. It declared its full support for the headmistress, the school board, and the Methodist Church Ghana in protecting the standards that have long distinguished the institution.
The Association concluded by reiterating that Wesley Girls High School remains a welcoming home for students who choose to be part of its community. It pledged to continue safeguarding the school’s legacy of excellence and moral grounding for future generations.
