The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied issuing a controversial statement that criticised captain William Troost-Ekong and striker Cyriel Dessers for the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The release, attributed to the Federation’s Communications Department, sparked outrage after singling out the two players. However, NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, clarified in a phone interview that the Federation did not authorise the statement.
“We are proud of our players. Blaming individuals is not acceptable. When we win, it is a team effort, and when we lose, it is the same,” Sanusi said. He praised both players for their past contributions, calling for respect and unity.
Sanusi confirmed that investigations are underway to identify the source of the unauthorised statement.
The draw leaves Nigeria’s qualification hopes in jeopardy, with the team on 11 points from eight matches and at risk of missing a second consecutive World Cup.
