Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections as the product of an extraordinary convergence of crises rather than a failure in governance.
Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, the Effutu MP urged party delegates to remain hopeful and put the election loss in its proper context.
“Yes, we lost the 2024 elections — and in a big way,” Afenyo-Markin admitted. “But let us be clear: this was not a defeat born out of failure. It was a perfect storm of adversity that no government in the Fourth Republic has ever faced.”
He cited a number of major national and international disruptions that, he argued, significantly challenged the government’s capacity to deliver and shaped unfavorable public sentiment.
“From the banking crisis that nearly collapsed our financial system, which we intervened to save with billions, to the global COVID-19 pandemic that halted the world, and the Russia-Ukraine war that triggered the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation,” he explained.
He further noted the added pressure of governing with a hung parliament and an opposition Speaker, stressing that such conditions were unprecedented in Ghana’s recent political history.
Despite these challenges, Afenyo-Markin commended the performance of the Akufo-Addo administration, highlighting its resilience during trying times.
“With Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the driving seat, we held the line,” he stated proudly.
He ended by encouraging unity and renewed determination within the party, emphasizing the need to learn from the past and prepare for a stronger comeback in future elections.
