Defence minister orders probe into Bawku clashes and appeals for calm

Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has directed a thorough investigation into the latest violent disturbances in Bawku, which occurred on Sunday, July 13. The move is part of renewed government efforts to address the recurring tensions in the Upper East Region town.

In a statement issued via his official Facebook page on Monday, July 14, Dr Boamah urged all parties involved to exercise restraint as security agencies begin a detailed probe into the latest clashes. He reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring lasting peace in Bawku, which has experienced a history of sporadic conflict.

“We are, once again, urging restraint and calm in Bawku regarding the latest developments as of yesterday,” the minister noted in his appeal to the public.

Dr Boamah further assured Ghanaians that prompt and decisive action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigations. “I have directed thorough investigations into the recent matter and promised to take swift action based on recommendations,” he stated.

He stressed that any response must be guided by facts and evidence to prevent further escalation and protect the lives and livelihoods of residents.

Concluding his statement, the Minister reaffirmed the need for collective responsibility and peace: “Once again, let us ensure restraint!”
