NPP opposes Ablekuma North re-run, vows to challenge case in court

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly opposed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct fresh elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency, describing the move as inconsistent and lacking transparency.

At a press conference held today, July 3, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua stated that the party had not consented to the expanded re-run and accused the EC of misrepresenting discussions that took place during a meeting on July 1.

“We are categorically denying the EC’s claim that there was agreement on a re-run in 19 polling stations. This contradicts earlier communication, including briefings to Parliament, which indicated that only three polling stations were affected,” Mr Kodua said.

He noted that the NPP had expressed serious concerns about what the party perceives as an abrupt and unexplained shift in the EC’s position. According to the party, the electoral body has not provided adequate justification for the increased number of polling stations designated for the re-run.

“The latest decision raises serious concerns about consistency and transparency in the electoral process,” Kodua emphasized, adding that the NPP would seek legal redress if the Electoral Commission does not reverse its directive.

The dispute arises from contested results in the Ablekuma North constituency during the recent general elections. The NPP’s strong objection underscores growing tensions between political parties and the Electoral Commission over the handling and finality of electoral outcomes.

The party’s demand for transparency comes amid broader national conversations about electoral integrity, a recurring issue in Ghana’s democratic landscape. Concerns over procedural clarity and fairness continue to drive public discourse, particularly in closely contested constituencies.

The Electoral Commission has yet to issue an official response to the NPP’s denial of agreement and the threat of legal action.
