Constance Gyasi Nimako, also known as Maa Adwoa, a trader accused of stealing and laundering money mistakenly credited to her bank account, has refunded GH¢230,000 out of GH¢800,000 allegedly misused.
Although she was absent from court, her mother, Cecilia Gyasi, appeared before relieving judge Evelyn Asamoah on her behalf. Constance remains in custody. Her lawyer informed the court about the partial repayment, but the judge declined to grant bail, citing the gravity of the charges and a commitment to an expeditious trial. The court directed the prosecution to file necessary disclosures and adjourned the case to July 23, 2025.
According to the prosecution, the GH¢800,000 was mistakenly transferred by Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) on February 6, 2025, into Constance’s Ecobank account instead of the intended recipient, a company CEO. Upon discovering the error, attempts by both CBG and Ecobank to recover the funds failed, as Constance had already moved and withdrawn most of the money.
She is accused of transferring GH¢300,000 to her mother’s Fidelity Bank account, GH¢400,000 to her own GCB Bank account, and withdrawing GH¢70,500 in cash. Only GH¢29,778.47 was left in the original account when the error was detected.
Investigators say Constance refused to cooperate with law enforcement, insulted officers, and went into hiding before her arrest in Kumasi. Her mother, who reportedly withdrew the GH¢300,000 at her daughter’s instruction, was arrested in Accra. Both have pleaded not guilty.
Cecilia Gyasi faces charges of abetment of crime to wit money laundering and was granted bail of GH¢500,000 with two sureties who must be immediate family members earning at least GH¢2,000 monthly.
Prosecution maintains that efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining funds. Constance claims the money was sent by a foreign company she had never dealt with before and said she used the funds to order goods.
