Presiding Bishop visits flood-affected Kpeehe Methodist Church, assures restoration support

The Presiding Bishop of The Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Johnson K. Asamoah-Gyadu, has visited the Methodist Church of the Resurrection at Kpeehe in Accra following severe flooding caused by torrential rains earlier in the week.

The visit was aimed at assessing damage to the church property, engaging with affected members, and offering reassurance as recovery efforts begin.

He was joined by the Lay President, clergy, and other church leaders, who toured the affected areas and joined members of the congregation in prayer.

Speaking during the visit, the Presiding Bishop described the situation as part of a wider pattern of flooding challenges in Accra, stressing the need for both institutional and technical responses to recurring drainage problems. He noted that blocked and overflowing drains had contributed significantly to the destruction, calling for urgent attention to long-term solutions.

He said the Conference Office would commission a technical assessment to guide restoration work in collaboration with diocesan and circuit authorities. He also encouraged local leaders to prioritise the continuity of education at the church-run school on the compound, warning that prolonged disruption would have wider social and economic effects on families.

Presiding Bishop assured the congregation of the Church’s solidarity, adding that support measures would be considered once the extent of the damage is fully established.

The Supt. Minister of the circuit, Very Rev. Dr. Clara Danquah, recounted how quickly the situation escalated after overnight rainfall, explaining that initial expectations that the rains would subside were quickly overturned as water levels rose.

She said floodwaters breached parts of the church building, damaging walls and windows and inundating rooms. According to her, the proximity of the church to a major drainage channel worsened the impact.

Church members joined the visiting delegation in assessing the destruction and offering prayers for recovery as efforts begin to restore the facility.
