Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, engaged in top-level discussions with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv, with talks largely centred on securing the freedom of two Ghanaian citizens captured amid the war in Ukraine.
The Minister indicated that the dialogue focused on Ghana’s humanitarian plea for the release of the two detainees, stressing that their treatment and protections must align with established international conventions. He expressed confidence that diplomatic engagements currently underway are yielding encouraging progress.
Beyond the issue of the detained nationals, the discussions also highlighted increasing alarm over trafficking syndicates preying on vulnerable African youth. These criminal networks, officials noted, lure young people with deceptive job offers, only to abandon them in perilous environments connected to the ongoing conflict. Both sides examined collaborative measures aimed at dismantling such operations and shielding young Africans from exploitation.
Mr Ablakwa delivered a message of gratitude from John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana, acknowledging the Ukrainian authorities for upholding the safety and legal protections of the Ghanaian detainees.
In addition to humanitarian concerns, the meeting broadened into discussions on enhancing cooperation between the two nations. The leaders expressed commitment to strengthening partnerships across key areas including agriculture, security, education, and commerce.
President Zelenskyy further invited President Mahama to undertake an official visit to Kyiv, underscoring Ukraine’s desire to reinforce diplomatic engagement and expand economic collaboration with Ghana.
The high-level interaction represents a notable diplomatic milestone, as Ghana steps up efforts to safeguard its citizens overseas while deepening strategic international alliances.
