Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, says he is confident that US police will identify those responsible for the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong in New York.
He has called for a thorough investigation into the killing, including efforts to establish whether the assailants were connected to individuals who allegedly bullied the teenager at school.
Mr Smith said surveillance footage from streets around the crime scene could help investigators identify the suspects, despite reports that they were masked during the attack.
He expressed confidence that the police were examining available records and would soon provide information on those responsible for the killing.
The Ambassador also wants investigators to establish whether the shooting was linked to the alleged bullying incident and the punishment subsequently meted out to the student involved.
He stressed, however, that the student accused of bullying Javits should not be directly implicated in the murder without evidence.
Mr Smith said he was not in a position to determine whether the alleged bully was involved in the shooting, noting that investigators were already pursuing leads and could rely on school records to identify the individuals involved in the earlier incident.
He said the investigation must establish whether the perpetrators were the same individuals involved in the bullying or had any connection to them.
Meanwhile, residents of the Bronx neighbourhood where Javits was killed are expected to hold a vigil on Thursday, November 5, to honour the teenager and demand action from authorities over youth violence.
The gathering is also expected to draw attention to concerns about gun violence, knife-related crimes and other criminal activities involving young people in the community.
Javits was fatally shot by unidentified assailants at about 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while on his way to school in the Bronx.
Reports indicate that the teenager had experienced bullying at school before his death.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation as authorities work to identify those responsible.
