The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to stage a demonstration today, Tuesday, November 3, to protest what it describes as alleged corruption, lack of transparency and the government’s failure to fulfil key campaign promises.
The protest, dubbed the “Yegyeyɛ Sika Demo,” is expected to bring together members and supporters of the opposition party, particularly its youth base, to demand accountability from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
A major focus of the demonstration will be calls for greater transparency surrounding the government’s recent evacuation exercise in South Africa, with the NPP youth wing demanding a detailed account of the funds reportedly allocated for the operation.
The protesters are also expected to raise concerns about the management of public resources and what they consider inconsistencies in the government’s handling of financial matters.
According to the NPP youth wing, the demonstration forms part of efforts to hold the government accountable and ensure that public officials are transparent in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Speaking to Citi News ahead of the protest, NPP Volta Regional Youth Organiser, Emmanuel Senyo Amekplenu, urged young Ghanaians to participate, arguing that citizens must not remain indifferent when questions are raised about the management of public funds.
He said the youth wing was demanding accountability from Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa over the GH¢49.7 million reportedly allocated for the South Africa evacuation exercise.
Mr Amekplenu questioned whether the discrepancies surrounding the amount involved were due to a transposition error or an accounting error during the reconciliation of the expenditure.
He insisted that the minister must provide a clear account of the funds to the Ghanaian public.
The NPP youth wing says the demonstration is intended to intensify pressure on the government to address the concerns raised and provide answers on the use of public funds.
