The family of late Central University law student, Ivan Apprey Baidoo, has petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death in a motorbike accident.
The petition, dated September 7, 2026, was filed by the family’s lawyers, Nyamekye & Partners, on behalf of Ivan’s father, Evans Baidoo.
Ivan, 20, was a second-year law student at Central University. He died following a motorbike accident on the Tema Motorway on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at about 4 p.m.
According to the petition, Ivan had booked a YANGO ride from Old Ashongman to East Legon and boarded a motorbike with registration number M 26-AB 384.
The family’s lawyers said the rider, identified as Samuel Arthur Wesley, told investigators at the Airport Police Station that a member of a police patrol team riding another motorbike had pursued him from the UPSA-Legon junction towards the Tema Motorway.
According to the rider’s account cited in the petition, the police patrol member eventually caught up with them and “hit them from the back of the motorbike.”
The impact reportedly caused both the rider and Ivan to fall onto the road, leaving them with severe injuries.
Ivan later died from injuries sustained in the accident.
The family said it has cooperated with investigations into Ivan’s death, including the coroner’s inquest and autopsy.
It added that the commissioned pathologist’s report had been obtained and sanctioned by the court.
However, the family said several issues surrounding the accident remain unclear and require further investigation.
Among the questions raised are the exact location of the accident, how the police were alerted, who transported the injured persons to Tema General Hospital and what statement the YANGO rider gave to investigators.
The family also wants clarification on the whereabouts of Ivan’s mobile phone and what footage from road-mounted traffic cameras captured at the time of the incident.
The lawyers further requested information on the identities of the police patrol team members and the officer allegedly involved in the pursuit.
According to the petition, the family had been assured that relevant road-camera footage would be made available to them.
However, the lawyers said more than a week had passed without the footage being provided.
They said the outstanding issues had left the family with “a bit of doubt and suspicion” about the circumstances surrounding Ivan’s death.
The family has consequently asked the CID to conduct a “full-scale public enquiry” into the incident.
The inquiry, according to the petition, should establish the sequence of events that led to the crash and ultimately to Ivan’s death.
The lawyers urged the CID to treat the matter as urgent and issue a report as soon as possible to provide a conclusive account of what happened.
The family says it hopes the investigation will answer the outstanding questions and bring closure to the matter.
