At least seven people, including a police officer, have been injured after a shooting incident involving residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba in Ghana’s Central Region.
The incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 1, is believed to be linked to a longstanding land dispute between residents of the two communities.
According to reports, some residents of Gomoa Oguaakrom, who claim ownership of portions of land in New Winneba, entered the community and allegedly opened fire.
The group is also said to have attempted to lock up some shops in the area, prompting resistance from residents of New Winneba. The confrontation reportedly escalated into an exchange of gunfire, leaving several people injured.
A police officer stationed at the New Winneba Police Station was among those reportedly caught up in the violence and sustained injuries.
The shooting sparked panic in the community, with some residents reportedly fleeing their homes and businesses to escape the gunfire.
Following the incident, the police reinforced security in the area as officers worked to restore calm and prevent the situation from escalating further.
The exact circumstances that triggered the confrontation remain unclear, and authorities have yet to provide a detailed account of what led to the shooting.
The conditions of those injured have also not been officially confirmed.
