Okaikwei north assembly deploys 24-hour taskforce to sustain lapaz decongestion drive

The Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly says it will deploy a 24-hour taskforce at Lapaz to sustain its ongoing decongestion exercise and prevent traders from returning to pavements and roadside spaces.

Municipal Chief Executive Christian Tetteh Badger explained that the decision follows what the assembly describes as a successful enforcement operation, with many traders already complying and relocating their goods from pedestrian walkways.

Speaking during a tour of the area on Monday, May 11, Mr Badger said the assembly is committed to maintaining order in the busy commercial enclave to ensure free movement for both pedestrians and motorists.

He noted that traders were previously given a seven-day ultimatum to vacate the pavements and roadside spaces, a directive he said has recorded encouraging compliance.

“I can say confidently that at Lapaz, pedestrians are moving freely. Cars are also moving freely. Also, we will place our taskforce on 24-hour surveillance on the main median so that anybody who returns, the taskforce will clear them. We are going to make sure that the place is free,” he said.

The decongestion exercise is part of broader efforts by the assembly to improve traffic flow, enhance pedestrian safety, and restore order within one of Accra’s busiest commercial corridors.

Authorities say although a few traders are yet to fully comply, monitoring will be intensified to ensure the gains made are sustained and the area remains clear of unauthorised trading activities.
