Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead following a robbery targeting a mobile money (MoMo) vendor at Tema Community 5 in the Greater Accra Region.
The incident occurred on Monday, April 13, 2026, at about 8:30 a.m. at Aba Fosuah Plaza, according to a statement signed by Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs for the Tema Regional Police Command.
Preliminary investigations indicate that one of the suspects, who was riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike, approached the MoMo vendor under the pretext of making a cash-out transaction. While the vendor attempted to process the request, the suspect allegedly pulled a pistol and demanded her bag containing cash.
Police say the vendor resisted, leading to a struggle involving both suspects. During the confrontation, the pillion rider reportedly shot the victim in the leg before the attackers fled the scene on a motorbike with the cash.
A police patrol team from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, which had been deployed nearby on routine security duties, responded swiftly after receiving a distress call. The officers pursued the suspects, who allegedly opened fire on them near a junction close to Smart Hotel.
The police returned fire, hitting both suspects. They reportedly fell off their motorbike during the exchange and were later transported to the Police Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
A search conducted on the suspects led to the retrieval of a 9mm pistol loaded with ammunition, three mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a talisman, a motorbike key, and cash amounting to GH¢11,390. Police also recovered the victim’s Ghana Card.
The injured MoMo vendor is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the mortuary pending identification and autopsy.
The Tema Regional Police Command has assured residents of its commitment to maintaining safety and security, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
