Armed Robbers Attack Berekum Chelsea Team Bus; Player Killed in Ashanti Region Incident

Police in the Ashanti Region have launched a manhunt for six armed men who attacked a bus carrying players and officials of Berekum Chelsea, resulting in the death of one footballer and sparking renewed concerns over highway safety in Ghana.

The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyanihin District of the Ashanti Region. The team was returning to Berekum after a trip to Samreboi when their VIP bus, registered AM 9334-20, came under attack.

According to a statement from the Ashanti Regional Police Command, six armed men—three reportedly carrying pump-action guns—ambushed the bus while it was in transit. In an attempt to escape the attack, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and skid into a nearby bush.

Police said officers responded swiftly to distress calls and arrived at the scene, where they found the damaged bus carrying about 30 players and officials.

During the attack, one player, identified as Dominic Frimpong, sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.

In a separate incident during the robbery, a 52-year-old passenger, George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of GHS 4,500.

Police investigators recovered two spent BB cartridges from the scene, which are being analyzed as part of ongoing investigations. No arrests have been made so far, but authorities say additional personnel and crime scene experts have been deployed to track down the suspects.
