ghana moves to end raw gold exports – Sammy Gyamfi

The Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has revealed that government has already set in motion an ambitious plan to phase out the export of raw minerals, with a target to fully transform the sector by 2030 under the direction of the President.

Speaking on PM Express Business Edition on Joy News, he disclosed that the transition from exporting unprocessed gold to refined products is not a future intention but an ongoing process. According to him, Ghana is deliberately reducing the volume of raw gold exports while increasing refined output.

He stressed that the initiative is already taking shape, particularly within the small-scale mining sector, which is serving as the starting point for the broader transformation agenda. The move, he explained, is backed by a clear national vision to retain more value within the country rather than exporting wealth in its raw form.

Describing the timeline, Mr. Gyamfi indicated that the programme is being treated as an urgent priority. He noted that the rollout is expected to begin within the year and be largely completed by the following year, underscoring government’s commitment to fast-tracking reforms in the gold industry.

Beyond refining, he highlighted plans to push Ghana further up the value chain through manufacturing. He explained that true value addition goes beyond refining gold into bullion, and must extend into fabrication — including the production of finished products such as jewellery.

As part of this next phase, efforts are underway to revive and strengthen local jewellery production under the Gold Board, positioning Ghana not just as a producer of gold, but as a hub for gold-based manufacturing and craftsmanship.
