Tourism Minister condemns alleged assault on artist Ibrahim Mahama

Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, has strongly denounced the alleged attack on renowned Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, describing the incident as deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

The reaction follows reports that the artist, who founded the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art and Red Clay Studio, was reportedly assaulted on Saturday, March 21 by individuals believed to be members of a police Special Operations team known as “Black Maria.”

Reports indicate that the incident left Mr Mahama with injuries, including dental damage and the loss of a tooth. His uncle, who was reportedly driving at the time of the incident, is also said to have suffered injuries during the confrontation.

In an open letter shared on Facebook on March 22, the Minister expressed her concern and extended her support and sympathy to the artist, describing the incident as unfortunate and worrying. She stressed the importance of protecting the dignity, safety, and rights of every individual, especially those who contribute significantly to the country’s creative industry.

She further revealed that she has been in contact with Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister for the Interior, to ensure that a full investigation is conducted to identify and hold those responsible accountable.

The Minister also reassured the artist of the government’s support, emphasizing that his safety, well-being, and contribution to Ghana’s creative arts sector remain extremely important to the country.
