Methodist Church Ghana pushes for action as obesity threat grows

The Methodist Church Ghana has observedWorld Obesity Day with a renewed focus onhealthy living and responsible care of the body.

Joining efforts led by the World Health Organization, the Church used the occasion to draw attention to the growing impact of obesity and the urgent need for awareness and practical action.

The Church noted that as life becomes busier and more demanding, health remains the foundation upon which families and national development depend. It described the body as a temple entrusted to humanity by the Creator and stressed that caring for it is both a spiritual obligation and a civic duty.

Obesity, once considered a problem limited to other parts of the world, is now a visible challenge within Ghana. It affects children, young people and adults, and increases the risk of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes and heart complications. These conditions continue to place pressure on families and the country’s healthcare system.

As part of the commemoration, The Methodist Church Ghana is rolling out an education campaign centered on removing stigma, promoting understanding and encouraging practical lifestyle changes.

The initiative seeks to help people see obesity as a complex health issue rather than a source of shame, while also offering simple guidance on healthy eating and regular physical activity.
