Kufuor breaks silence: “I never backed Alan against Akufo-Addo”

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has firmly dismissed long-standing claims that he supported Alan Kyerematen over Nana Akufo-Addo as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate in 2008.

Mr. Kufuor described the rumours as baseless and unfair, stressing that he neither plotted against Akufo-Addo nor offered any form of support to Alan’s bid.

“I never supported him against anybody,” he clarified. “I didn’t give him anything to aid him go and defeat anybody.”

He said the narrative, though persistent for years, has no factual grounding. Contrary to suggestions that he preferred Alan, Mr. Kufuor insisted he remained neutral throughout internal party contests.

Recalling events after the NPP’s 2000 victory, he revealed that he actually attempted to bring Alan into his government, but Alan declined the appointment.

“When I contacted him to make him a Minister, he turned down the offer,” he recounted.

The clarification comes at a time when internal party debates within the NPP have intensified following the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

Speaking on The Delay Show, the former President also criticised the Akufo-Addo administration for key policy failures which, he believes, contributed significantly to the party’s electoral loss.

He cited the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, the PDS saga and the National Cathedral project as major setbacks that eroded public confidence in the government.

Mr. Kufuor added that although the Akufo-Addo administration started strongly, critical decisions taken after the COVID-19 pandemic raised concerns among voters. These issues, he said, signalled a departure from the momentum built in 2016, when the NPP campaigned on the achievements of his own administration — a foundation that, in his view, had previously boosted public trust and party credibility.
