A coordinated security operation in the Obuasi enclave has disrupted a network of illegal miners who had taken over portions of a legitimate concession in the Anyankyireml area. The NAIMOS Taskforce carried out the enforcement action on Monday, November 17, 2025, following credible intelligence that the intruders had blocked Asanti Gold Corporation from accessing its own legally acquired site.
The joint team moved into multiple hotspots, including lands around the Obuasi Airport where galamsey activity has been growing despite recent public concern. Security officers encountered makeshift settlements, operational pits, and equipment believed to be used for illegal extraction. Several of these structures were demolished to prevent the operators from returning.
During the raid, officers confiscated motorbikes, water pumps, vehicles, and other tools used to support the illicit operations. Although most of the miners escaped upon sighting the Taskforce, one man identified as a major coordinator of the activities was apprehended. He has since been handed over to the police and is expected to be prosecuted once investigations are finalised.
Authorities say the swoop forms part of an intensified national strategy aimed at dismantling illegal mining networks that continue to degrade water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves across the Ashanti Region. Security agencies have increased visibility in identified galamsey corridors to reduce the ability of miners to regroup after raids.
The Taskforce stressed that Monday’s operation is only one of several actions planned to restore control over concession areas and safeguard the environment from ongoing destruction. They reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining pressure on illegal miners, especially in communities where the fight against galamsey remains a persistent challenge.
