The Presiding Bishop of The Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Asamoah-Gyadu, has commended the visionaries and organizers behind the program “Honoring Our Supernumeraries and/or Their Spouses and Venerating Our Deceased.”
The event, which took place on September 22, 2025, at the Bethany Methodist Church, Dzorwolu, brought together retired ministers, their families, and church members to celebrate service and reflect on the sacrifices of those who have passed on.
The Presiding Bishop further expressed gratitude to God for sustaining the initiative over the years and pledged to strengthen it further. He revealed that with six years left before his retirement, he intends to extend the program across all dioceses to ease participation and reduce the burden of long-distance travel. He also announced plans for regional end-of-year parties in December to honor retirees and their spouses.
The Most Rev. Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu, however, raised concerns about delays in submitting medical claims, urging timely filing so that reimbursements can be processed without difficulty. He encouraged members to bring their needs to the Church, assuring them that any request within the Church’s means would be addressed.
The Presiding Bishop emphasized that caring for retirees is not just a duty but also a form of evangelism that encourages commitment and loyalty to the Church. He acknowledged that some individuals had stopped attending church due to unfair treatment, citing an encounter in the Fosu Diocese where the widow of a late minister complained about neglect after her husband’s death.
The program served as both a celebration and a reminder of the Church’s responsibility to care for those who have dedicated their lives to ministry and to uphold fairness and compassion.
