2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Ghana secure 1-0 win over Mali

Black Stars returned to winning form in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, September 8.

Alexander Djiku was the hero of the night, netting the decisive goal in the 49th minute after connecting with a Jordan Ayew delivery. The strike came just moments after Caleb Yirenkyi’s effort rattled the crossbar, sparking the sequence that led to Ghana’s opener.

Head coach Otto Addo made four changes to the side that drew against Chad, handing starts to Djiku, Mohammed Salisu, Thomas Partey, and Kwasi Sibo.

The first half offered few chances, with Mali managing the only shot on target, while Antoine Semenyo went close for Ghana following an incisive run from Mohammed Kudus.

The second half, however, swung in Ghana’s favour. Once Djiku broke the deadlock, the Black Stars were forced to withstand waves of Malian pressure. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare produced key saves, while Salisu and Djiku combined to repel multiple attacks. Thomas Partey also made a crucial clearance late in the game to preserve the lead.

Despite Mali’s determined push for an equaliser, Ghana held firm until the final whistle, securing three valuable points.

The victory moves the Black Stars three points clear at the top of Group I, keeping their qualification hopes firmly in their own hands as they prepare for the next round of matches.
