Ghana Black Stars head coach Otto Addo remains confident about his team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the recent setback against Chad.
The Black Stars dropped points in a surprising draw against Chad, but they still lead Group I with 16 points. Comoros sit just behind with 15 points, followed by Madagascar with 13 points, Mali with 12 points, the Central African Republic with five points, and Chad at the bottom with a single point.
Speaking ahead of Ghana’s upcoming clash against Mali, Addo acknowledged the disappointment in the camp following the Chad match but stressed that lessons had been learned. “The entire team felt very disappointed after the draw against Chad because there were high expectations for us to win. We have analysed the game very well and hope we have learnt from this,” Addo said.
The coach highlighted the advantage of playing at home, with supporters backing the team. “Surely it is easier to play at home with our spectators supporting us and players giving their maximum best. I expect something different from the players this time around, and I hope we learnt from our mistake against Chad,” he added.
Addo also addressed concerns about his position as head coach, noting that the outcome of the upcoming match is not a question of personal statistics but of performance. “The good thing is we still have it in our own hands and we have to keep the pace high. We will aim to win the game to put concerns about my future to rest,” he stated.
The Black Stars will be without the services of Sulemana Ibrahim and Elisha Owusu due to injury and suspension, respectively, ahead of their match against Mali. The game is set to kick off at 19:00 GMT on Monday.
Addo remains focused on maintaining momentum in the group and ensuring the team learns from its mistakes as they pursue a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
