Barcelona risk losing Frenkie de Jong on a free as renewal talks stall

Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong appear to have put their past troubles behind them, with the Dutch midfielder enjoying arguably his best run of form for the Blaugrana over the last nine months. Yet, despite the improved relationship, a much-discussed contract renewal remains unresolved.

At 28, Frenkie de Jong was being considered for a sale this time last year, but in recent months both player and club have publicly declared their desire to continue together. Negotiations over a new three-year contract, with an option for an additional year, are ongoing.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona recently resumed discussions with de Jong’s new agent, Sebastien Ledure.

Previous delays were linked to the midfielder’s separation from former representative Ali Dursun, a split that required litigation. With that matter now settled, talks were expected to progress—but no agreement has yet been reached.

The lack of progress is particularly pressing: in just four months, de Jong will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with another club.

Despite the uncertainty, Frenkie de Jong has reiterated his commitment to Barcelona, stressing that he intends to sign a new deal and is happy at the club.

As the squad’s second-most senior figure after Marc-André ter Stegen—and with the German expected to lose his starting role to Joan Garcia this season—de Jong looks set to wear the captain’s armband on multiple occasions.

On the pitch, de Jong has formed a commanding midfield partnership with Pedri under Hansi Flick.

Since returning to full fitness, the duo have become almost undroppable, with Pedri openly praising de Jong’s influence and his ability both on and off the ball.

While the club remains optimistic, Barcelona’s leadership will be under pressure to secure de Jong’s signature before other suitors circle.
