Public perception of Ghana Military under strain – Dr. Andoh-Arthur

Dr. Johnny Andoh-Arthur, a lecturer at the University of Ghana and a specialist in psychology, has expressed concern over what he describes as a gradual erosion of public trust in the Ghana Armed Forces.

Speaking during an interview on WTV’s Morning Show, Sore Na Hyeren, on August 14, 2025, Dr. Andoh-Arthur addressed the recent helicopter crash that claimed several lives.

He urged Ghanaians to exercise patience with the military, noting that the institution has its own operational processes that may not always be fully understood by the public.

However, he cautioned that the perception gap between the Armed Forces and civilians appears to be widening. According to him, while the military’s discipline and dedication remain commendable, certain recent incidents have created doubt in the minds of ordinary citizens.

“The military has its ways of operating, and the public should be patient with them,” he said. “But we must also acknowledge that public trust is a crucial asset, and once it begins to wane, restoring it becomes a challenge.”

Dr. Andoh-Arthur emphasized that rebuilding confidence will require transparency, effective communication, and a deliberate effort to bridge the gap between military operations and civilian understanding. He further stressed that public trust is not just a matter of image but a foundation for national unity and cooperation during crises.
