Nkawie Court remands farmer for stealing ginger

The Nkawie Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region has remanded a 26-year-old farmer into prison custody for allegedly stealing ginger valued at GH¢2,000 at Gyankobaa near Nkawie.

The accused, Kwame Alugu, also known as Jansarah, pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to reappear before the court, presided over by Robert Addo, on August 22.

Prosecuting, Police Detective Chief Inspector Ntim Boadu told the court that the complainant, Regina Agyei, owns a ginger farm in Gyankobaa where the accused resides.

On May 26 at about 3:00 p.m., the complainant went to the farm and found Alugu harvesting half a bag of ginger. She convinced him to carry the produce home so they could sell and share the proceeds, and he agreed.

However, during the journey, the complainant made a phone call and began narrating the incident. Sensing danger, Alugu fled with the ginger. The matter was reported to the Toase Police.

On August 6, the accused was arrested in connection with another theft case, and the complainant identified him at the police station as the person who stole her ginger.

In his caution statement, Alugu admitted selling the ginger to someone in Gyankobaa but failed to provide the buyer’s details. After investigations, he was charged and brought before the court.
