Mahama slammed for delaying Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill – Educationist

Educationist and trade unionist Nicholas Taylor has criticised President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he describes as a deliberate and hypocritical delay in the passage of Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

Speaking on the WTV Ghana Morning Show, Sore Na Hyerɛn, on Friday, July 11, Mr. Taylor accused President Mahama of backtracking on a core promise made to Ghanaians while in opposition—that the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill would be passed swiftly under his leadership.

According to Nicholas Taylor, that commitment has not been honoured since Mahama returned to office. He believes the current government is intentionally delaying action on the bill despite having both the executive authority and parliamentary support to get it signed into law.

He contrasted this delay with the speed at which the government passed the controversial D-Fuel Tax Bill, suggesting the administration is only swift when the legislation serves its financial or political interests.

Nicholas Taylor argued that the lack of urgency on the LGBTQ+ bill—despite its overwhelming public, religious, and cultural support—is a betrayal of the trust reposed in the President and his party.

He warned that continued inaction could cost the government support from its faith-based and traditional backers, who feel let down by the silence and delay on a matter they consider morally urgent.

The anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which was passed by Parliament in early 2024, remains unsigned. The government has offered no clear explanation for the hold-up, even as pressure mounts from both civil society and key political voices, including Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George.

Nicholas Taylor urged President Mahama to stop the political gamesmanship and show decisive leadership on the issue. He said Ghanaians expect the President to follow through on his promise—not only to secure votes, but to defend the cultural and moral values of the country.
