The Bibiani District Court has sentenced identical twins, Seth Frimpong alias Atta Payin and Emmanuel Frimpong alias Atta Kakra, to 48 months’ imprisonment each for dishonestly appropriating an unregistered motorbike valued at GH¢13,000.
The twins—aged welders and excavator operators, respectively—were convicted of conspiracy to commit a crime and stealing after they admitted to stealing the motorbike from Adiembra near Chirano in the Western North Region on June 16, 2025.
The court, presided over by Mr. Lord Delvin Essandoh, delivered concurrent sentences on both charges, resulting in a total of four years for each convict. In a rare and symbolic decision, the judge ordered that Seth serve his sentence at Obuasi Prisons and Emmanuel at Kumasi Central Prison, stating clearly that they would not enjoy the “reward” of serving time together.
“Historically with respect to twins, Romulus and Remus were twins known for the founding of the City of Rome and by extension the Roman Kingdom, albeit marred by the slaying of Remus by Romulus,” the judge said in his ruling.
“Here before this court are identical twins who have chosen to be known by their criminal deeds…. This court would have preferred that even though they came into this world together, it does not mean they had to fulfil the same destiny and engage in criminality together.”
The ruling came after both brothers pleaded guilty with explanation and appealed for leniency, citing poverty, a partial refund of GH¢3,440, and a lack of parental support.
The case was prosecuted by Chief Inspector B.O. Agyemang, who told the court that the complainant, Daniel Fosu, had parked his unregistered Haojin motorbike at his residence on June 15, 2025. He discovered it missing the following morning around 4:00 a.m.
Investigations began after Samuel Akurugu Manzan, a tricycle operator seen leaving the area, was apprehended by residents. Upon questioning, he admitted the twins had hired him under the pretext of visiting relatives, only to steal the motorbike during the night.
Following leads, police discovered the stolen bike on June 30 at a mechanic shop in Bibiabi. The chassis number was matched, and the bike was returned to its owner per the court’s order.
The twins were later arrested on July 4, 2025, at the Kwamekrom Police Checkpoint while traveling aboard a Kumasi–Diaso-bound vehicle. They confessed to selling the bike to a man called Chairman at Lineso for GH¢4,000, keeping the proceeds for themselves.
Further police checks revealed that both brothers were repeat offenders, with prior convictions of 24 and 3 months, and a documented escape from custody in a separate case.
