The Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has assured the public that there will be no military presence in today’s crucial rerun elections in the Ablekuma North Constituency. His statement comes amidst rising public concern following the Electoral Commission’s decision to rerun polls in 19 polling stations within the constituency.
Addressing Ghanaians through his official Facebook page on Friday, July 11, Dr Boamah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to peace, transparency, and democratic integrity.
“To ensure a peaceful and democratic process, the Ghana Police Service will be fully in charge of security for today’s elections in Ablekuma North Constituency,” he wrote.
The Defence Minister emphasized the government’s position by repeating the phrase “there will be no military deployment” three times in his post—clearly aiming to dispel any anxiety among voters and electoral stakeholders.
He cited past incidents of electoral violence, including the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and the tragic killing of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 elections, as hard lessons that should not be repeated. According to Dr Boamah, safeguarding the electoral process begins with avoiding intimidation and ensuring a civilian-led security approach.
“Let’s learn from past experiences… and prioritise citizen safety and security,” he urged.
The Minister also expressed confidence in the capacity and professionalism of the Ghana Police Service, stating that they are adequately trained and equipped to handle electoral security operations.
“The Ghana Police Service is trained to handle electoral security, and we trust them to do their job,” he stated.
He concluded with a call for calm and civic responsibility, encouraging voters to show up peacefully and participate in the democratic process.
“Let’s keep the peace and make our voices heard as John Dramani Mahama resets Ghana and creates more opportunities for Ghanaians,” he added.
As voting proceeds in Ablekuma North, the public awaits not only the outcome of the polls but also the demonstration of a safe, credible, and peaceful electoral environment.
