The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has dismissed claims by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that it is boycotting the upcoming parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.
Gbande insisted that the NPP remains a participant in the race, pointing out that their candidate’s name still appears on the official ballot paper. Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on Wednesday, July 9, he described the NPP’s public posture as misleading and designed to confuse voters.
”The NPP is not our competitor in this election. They are participants and have chosen to paint a picture as though they have withdrawn. But they are on the ballot, and that makes them active in the election”, Gbande said.
He challenged the NPP to put its claim in writing and formally notify the Electoral Commission if they are indeed withdrawing from the contest.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled a rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency. This follows disruptions during the December 2024 parliamentary election that prevented full collation of results.
Although the NPP has said it will not participate in the rerun, describing the process as illegal and in contempt of court, Gbande dismissed that position as an excuse to mask deeper issues within the party.
According to him, the NPP is avoiding the rerun because of its dwindling popularity in what used to be one of its strongholds. He accused the governing party of failing the people of Ablekuma North over the past eight years.
”The NPP knows that during their time in office, they failed to bring any meaningful development to Ablekuma North. They didn’t spare the area from their fraud and deception”, he said.
He criticised former President Akufo-Addo for focusing development projects in his hometown while neglecting areas like Ablekuma North.
”When former President Akufo-Addo was sending asphalt roads and internet to his village in Kyebi, he forgot about Ablekuma North, one of the areas that supported his party”.
Gbande further claimed that the NPP’s lack of credibility and internal unity has rendered them unfit to run a credible campaign.
”In their own party, they are not organised. They are dismantled, divided, and not ready for any election. Each time they speak in public, they lose more support because Ghanaians know they lack moral integrity”, he stated.
He concluded by saying the damage caused by the NPP government will not be forgotten soon.
”What Akufo-Addo and his people did to Ghana cannot be wiped away in just seven or eight months. The NPP’s eight years were a national fraud, and that memory still lingers in the minds of Ghanaians”.
Gbande affirmed that the rerun will proceed with or without the NPP’s involvement, and insisted that the NPP is aware their candidate stands no chance of winning.
”They know their candidate cannot win this election. If they had the opportunity, they would have changed the person by now”, he added.
