Tragedy struck Kalba in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District as a middle-aged man was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen while riding his motorcycle. The victim, who had travelled from his hometown of Uro to charge his phone, was attacked by assailants who emerged from the bush, killing him instantly. His body has been transported to St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital in Damongo.
The killing is believed to be linked to the ongoing Gbenyiri conflict, which has already claimed dozens of lives, displaced thousands, and destroyed property across the district. The unrest intensified following a land dispute between a local resident and the chief’s son on August 23, which quickly escalated to violence spreading across Kalba and neighboring areas.
Despite the presence of 400 police officers deployed to stabilize the area, the latest incident underscores the fragility of security in the region. Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu, together with senior officials from the Armed Forces, Prisons Service, and Immigration Service, recently visited the conflict zones to review the situation and bolster law enforcement efforts.
Residents voiced growing frustration and fear, questioning whether security forces can protect the community. “People are scared to go out; the attackers are still at large. We need action, not promises,” one anonymous local said.
This latest death raises the official toll of the Gbenyiri conflict to 32 and highlights the urgent need for sustained intervention to restore safety and rebuild trust in the affected communities.
