The minister for sports and recreation, kofi adams, has directed the director general of the national sports authority, yaw ampofo ankrah, to withdraw the appointments of 17 individuals said to have been engaged without proper authorisation.
the instruction was delivered at a meeting held on february 23 involving the minister, the nsa board and the director general.
prior to that, on february 9, 2026, reports by muftawu nabila abdulai indicated that the nsa board had already asked mr ankrah to annul the recruitments after it was discovered that the appointments were made without the necessary clearance.
the board had earlier fixed february 6 as the deadline for the revocation, a decision taken during a retreat in ada. this is believed to be the second time the board has formally requested the cancellation. insiders reveal that some of the roles assigned are not captured in the authority’s approved organisational framework.
sources further suggest that mr ankrah was unwilling to reverse the appointments, creating friction between the board and management. there were indications the board was prepared to take additional steps should its directive continue to be ignored.
following earlier social media reports, mr ankrah justified the recruitment exercise, asserting that the newly engaged staff played a role in ghana’s qualification for the 2026 fifa world cup to be hosted in the united states, mexico and canada.
additional allegations claim that certain new recruits were granted responsibilities ranking above existing deputy director generals.
the situation has also reportedly impacted long-serving personnel. thomas kumordzi, formerly head of security at the nsa, was said to have been reassigned to the borteyman sports complex — a venue not directly managed by the authority. upon reporting there, facility administrators allegedly redirected him back to his previous station.
circumventing established procedures constitutes a breach of administrative protocols.
questions also remain over the mode of payment for the newly recruited staff. attempts to verify how they are being remunerated have yielded no clear answers, although some officials claim salaries have not been processed through nsa accounts due to the absence of clearance from the finance ministry.
the minister had previously sought dialogue to address the impasse, but mr ankrah was reportedly in the united kingdom at the time and only returned to the country on february 17.
