Rt. Rev. Samuel Kofi Osabutey expounds Theological meaning of Advent, calls Christians to inner renewal

The Superintendent Minister of the Dzorwulu Circuit, The Rt. Rev. Samuel Kofi Osabutey, has highlighted the deep theological significance of the Advent season, emphasizing that its themes are meant to draw Christians closer to the true nature and character of God.

Speaking on WTV Morning Show, Sore Na Hyeren, he explained that the season of Advent is not merely an annual event or a series of church activities, but a spiritual journey that directs believers to the person of Christ and the promise of His coming.

Drawing from the Advent liturgical readings, The Rt. Rev. Osabutey highlighted Jeremiah 33:14-16 as a foundational text, stressing its focus on righteousness and the prophetic revelation of the One who is to come, His identity, character, and divine purpose.

He further referenced Malachi 3:1-4, which speaks to the works the Messiah is to accomplish, including purification and restoration. Jeremiah 3:14-20 presents God as a restorer, while Micah 5:2-5 reinforces the promise of a ruler whose coming brings peace and stability.

According to him, these four scriptural passages will shape and guide the Methodist Church Ghana’s liturgical focus throughout the four weeks of the Advent season.

The Rt. Rev. Osabutey urged Christians to use this period as a time for sincere reflection and repentance. “One of the essential things we must think about is to repent, forsake worldliness, deny ourselves, and live godly lives during this season,” he advised.

He further encouraged believers to examine their motives and conduct, emphasizing the need to avoid exploiting others and instead cultivate purity of heart and integrity as they prepare for the second coming of Christ.

Drawing a vivid analogy, he noted that if people take time to beautify their homes, shop, and prepare outwardly for festive celebrations, then Christians must be even more committed to preparing inwardly—purifying their hearts and shedding lifestyles that do not reflect Christ.

He reminded the faithful that Advent is ultimately a season of expectation, hope, and anticipation, a sacred period of waiting for the fulfillment of God’s promise.
