Presiding Bishop cautions against inviting Prophets to Methodist Pulpits

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Johnson Asamoah Gyedu, has issued a firm directive warning that no society within the church should invite external prophets to their pulpits.

He delivered this strong caution during the Expanded General Purposes Council (GPC) and the climax of the 190th Anniversary celebrations held at the historic Wesley Methodist Church in Cape Coast.

According to the Presiding Bishop, the decision is rooted in the church’s responsibility to safeguard its members from teachings that do not align with Methodist doctrine, traditions, and values. He explained that allowing unapproved prophetic voices risks exposing members to distortions of the faith and practices that are inconsistent with the moral and spiritual foundation of the church.

“If any society of the Methodist Church Ghana goes ahead to invite prophets to their pulpits, and it comes to our attention, the leadership will take the necessary disciplinary action against that society,” Most Rev. Gyedu cautioned.

He stressed that the directive was not meant to stifle spiritual growth but rather to protect the flock from misleading doctrines and ‘foreign teachings’ that may contradict the church’s heritage of discipline, sound preaching, and scriptural holiness.

The Presiding Bishop further emphasized that Methodism has thrived for 190 years in Ghana because of its strong adherence to biblical truth, structured leadership, and an unwavering commitment to evangelism through preaching, hymns, and acts of service. He reminded members that John Wesley’s legacy as “a man of the Word” must continue to guide the church in shaping future generations.

The statement drew strong attention during the gatherings, with many laity and clergy reaffirming their support for the church’s leadership in preserving Methodist identity. Observers noted that the Presiding Bishop’s warning reflects a growing concern about the rise of prophetic ministries in Ghana and their increasing influence over Christian worship practices.

The Expanded GPC and the 190th Anniversary climax, attended by hundreds of clergy, Lay Chairmen, and well-wishers, provided the platform not only for thanksgiving and reflection but also for important directives such as this, which are expected to shape the church’s direction in the years ahead.

The celebrations in Cape Coast were marked by vibrant thanksgiving, hymn singing, and renewal of commitment to evangelism. Yet, the Presiding Bishop’s words served as a sober reminder that the future of the Methodist Church Ghana depends not only on celebration but also on guarding the purity of its teachings and the integrity of its pulpits.

As the church looks beyond its 190-year heritage, the directive is expected to strengthen the spiritual discipline and doctrinal unity of the Methodist family in Ghana, ensuring that the pulpit remains a sacred space dedicated solely to the authentic preaching of God’s Word.

  1. The news that no prophet who is not a church member should be invited to our pulpit is a step in right direction but I have something to say. It is time the church have prophetic school for it’s members. If we saw the need to have school for the Ordained Ministry and Evangelist, then it would also be right to establish school of the prophet. Our youth which have those gifts are moving away. The church members need to hear from God and get directions from God. It is time we add that to our portfolio. The gift of an evangelist and pastor is different from gift of prophet. Let train our own prophet to prophesy in our method. Thank you
