The Ghana Police Service has arrested 54 suspects and seized large quantities of suspected narcotic substances during a series of intelligence-led operations across several suburbs of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The exercise, carried out by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team (SOT), forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and crack down on criminal activities in communities identified as hotspots for the illegal narcotics trade.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 15, the Police said the coordinated operations targeted several locations, including Atwima-Koforidua, Abuakwa, Sofo Line Lorry Station, Ash Town, Ahwia, Bantama, Aputuogya, Krofrom, Pankrono, Tafo, Twumduase, Krofrom-Colombia and Alarba.
According to the Police, the operations led to the arrest of 54 suspects, comprising 49 men and five women. Among those arrested are 11 Malian nationals and 38 Ghanaians, who are being investigated for various alleged drug-related offences.
Officers recovered large quantities of Tramadol tablets of varying strengths, hundreds of sealed packages containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances, and several items believed to have been used in processing illegal drugs.
Other exhibits retrieved during the operation include 13 bottles of fruit juice branded FEMUDE suspected to contain narcotic substances, 34 narcotics processing materials, 13 pairs of scissors, 11 boxes of assorted foreign cigarettes, 23 mobile phones, two casino jackpot machines, and four unregistered motorcycles.
The Police said all the suspects remain in custody and are assisting with investigations. They are expected to be arraigned before court upon the completion of investigations.
The Service assured the public that similar intelligence-led operations will continue across the country as part of efforts to combat organised crime, drug trafficking and related offences.
“The Service remains resolute in its commitment to identifying, arresting and prosecuting persons engaged in criminal activities,” the statement said.
The Police also appealed to the public to continue providing credible and timely information to support law enforcement efforts, stressing that community cooperation remains vital in promoting safety, security and public order nationwide.
