Over 200 traders at Berekum Central Market defrauded after paying GHC500 registration fee for GHC10k loan

Traders at the Berekum Central and Senase markets in the Bono Region have reportedly lost large sums of money after being misled by individuals claiming to provide business loans of up to GH¢10,000.

The traders, primarily women, were asked to pay registration and processing fees ranging from GH¢250 to GH¢500, depending on the loan amount they were seeking. After receiving the payments, the suspected scammers disappeared, leaving victims without the promised financial support.

Those affected represent a wide range of market activities, including sales of tomatoes, fish, vegetables, tubers, and clothing materials.

Nana Akua Serwaa, the Queen Mother of the dry fish (Mponam) traders, told JoyNews that she was approached to help mobilize her colleagues. The group allegedly claimed their presence was part of a government-backed initiative to make loans accessible to market women. She lamented that the process, which appeared legitimate, turned out to be a ruse.

Similarly, yam trader Madam Beatrice Boabeng described the situation as devastating, noting that all attempts to reach the individuals involved have been unsuccessful.

Another victim, Abenaa Meayaa, appealed for urgent action from both the police and government authorities, warning that many more traders could fall prey to the scheme if it is not addressed quickly.

The affected traders are calling for a swift investigation and the recovery of their funds, as authorities prepare to look into the alleged fraudulent activities.
